DV8

Name: DV8
Founded: 1986
Founders: Lloyd Newson, Michelle Richecoeur, Nigel Charnock
Works include: "Bein' apart, lonely art" (1985) // "My sex, our dance" (1986) // "My body, your body" (1987) // "The cost of living" (2003) // "Can we talk about this?" (2011-2012)

DV8's work is about breaking down the barriers between theatre and dance, and presenting ideas and feelings clearly through mainly movement. They believe in taking risks both physically and aesthetically. The company are constantly challenging what we can or should address through dance - they push their own boundaries. Newson states that he "can only create when [he] has something to say". The company believes that dance shouldn't just be bout good technique, and instead should be about portraying feelings and exploring important ideas.

DV8 use a lot of counter-balancing and transference of weight. As well as using a lot of movement, DV8 also uses stillness to create different techniques (for example, in "John", there are moments where the entire ensemble is still apart from one person working their way through the group).
