Brechtian Devised Piece - Refugees (2) (London)

At the beginning of today's lesson, we went over what we did in our previous one. Instead of developing exciting scenes we created a new scene.

The new scene we created told the story of how Rhiannon's character, Veronica, fell under Charlie's characters power. Rhiannon's character was a London solicitor. We decided to have her standing centre stage with the rest of us walking around her, whilst doing the Frantic Assembly of "Round-by-through". The idea of this was to create a busy scene around her, as if she was in London. Whilst we created this scene, Rhiannon did a monologue. We then lined up and did a few movements in unison, which represented us all awaiting a tube train to arrive. Next, we pushed and shoved each other and then took positions as if we were on a tube - this involved us all standing up, facing different directions, and holding one hand above our head with a bent elbow (as if we were holding on to a handle). To represent the tube moving, we all swayed and then stopped in unison to show the tube stopping. Once the tube had stopped, we all exited leaving James and Rhiannon. They performed a physical theatre duet scene to show them falling in love at first sight. James's character, however, was not actually in love with her and was in fact working for Charlie's character - the slave master. James's character fooled Veronica and took her to the slave master.

We didn't get any further with our piece after this scene, but we managed to achieve a lot with progression of ideas and a plan for next lesson.
