Contemporary Theatre (15) (Vocal technique & Prologue)

We began this lesson with some exercises to improve our use of voice. Below is what we did:
  • we laid down on the floor with our hands on our diaphragm and breathed in and out slowly - this was to ensure everyone knew where their diaphragm was and to make sure we were all breathing in the right place (i.e. breathing lower down rather than using our shoulders.
  • whilst lying down, we breathed in and then breathed out on a "hmm" - when doing this, we felt our diaphragms to feel them go inwards wen doing this exercise.
  • we repeated the exercises above on an "ng" sound and then again on an "ah". We then did this exercise again on an "ah" but standing up - some people in the class struggled with this sill as they tensed their shoulders. Therefore we did a spinal roll and shook our arms out and then repeated the exercise. We all found it a lot easier the second time.
  • we did a couple of tongue twisters: "red lorry yellow lorry" / "Unique, New York" / "uranium, millennium" - this was to improve our articulation / diction.
  • we walked around saying our name as if we were introducing ourselves in an interview - this was to see how we say our names at the moment, so we can then see the contrast later on when we have done more of these exercises across the weeks.
Also in this lesson, we discussed what we could do for our prologue and then began work on it. We decided we definitely wanted to have sound in our prologue, and thought that we could use "Nightmare" by Avenged Sevenfold as it is an eerie beginning and then a chaotic feel (as we wanted our audience to be confused and then shocked by a chaotic atmosphere, as this fits with the atmosphere of the play itself). We liked the idea of everyone in their own social lives, doing their own thing, and then becoming uniformed and identical when Big Brother speaks. However, we thought we should include Goldstein to give a reason for things to turn chaotic. Hope then came up with the idea of people being in a cinema, watching propaganda (of Big Brother) which is then interjected with Goldstein (the leader of the rebellion), which causes chaos. We decided we would use this cinema idea.

Our prologue begins with Rhiannon, Ollie, Oliver, Kat, Lewis and Robert sitting on the floor in two lines of three, looking up at the projection on the ceiling. The projection will have images of Big Brother and his achievements. Some of them could be eating popcorn to make it clear to the audience that they are in a cinema. James, Charlie, Hope and I would then enter on to the corners of the stage, just so we are visible - we represent Inner Class people who support / work for Big Brother. When Goldstein appears on the projection we threaten those on the floor to ensure they are loyal to Big Brother. As we thought our use of the sheets were effective in our "After Troy" prologue, we would use them again here. However, instead of representing babies, the sheets this time represent their thoughts. Each person will have a sheet with them (not visible to the audience) which will be pulled up behind their heads. Everyone's sheets will be white (to show that they haven't been corrupted by Goldstein and are still loyal to Big Brother), apart from Rhiannon's who's will be black (to show that she is against Big Brother and has had negative thoughts about him). We then perform a lift with Rhiannon. She runs towards the front and we pick her up slightly; we repeat this lift but we actually lift her up in the air this time.
