London Riots Devised Piece (5)

30/09/15

Today we worked on the "emotional turmoil" scene; this scene is a dance/physical theatre scene. Throughout this scene we will have the projection of the animation Lewis made. The animation shows four people throwing a petrol bomb into a window, the building and its neighbouring buildings then set on fire and break down. After they have crumbled a cartoon version of the River Thames appears with areas around it lighting up, until the whole of London had been lit up and the words "Broken Britain" are displayed on screen. The song "Playing With Fire" by Plan B plays throughout the animation. We used this song as a stimulus for this scene. We already had a rough idea that we wanted this scene and what to include, but the song gave us inspiration for style and the idea of betrayal and manipulation.

I was asked to choreograph the beginning section of this piece. Tom, Toby, Lewis and I begin this scene by walking on stage by doing four devlope walks. We then pliƩ and swing our left arm to the right side (to represent throwing a petrol bomb). After this, we come out of the pliƩ by transferring our weight on to our left leg and bringing our left arm back so our hand covers our face (representing how the rioters tried their best to hide their identities). A more commercial style of dance was them adopted, with a harsh spring back and kick, a chest pulse and an attitude jump. The four of us then moved to join the rest of the ensemble in different positions standing up, with Tom sitting on the floor.

The section we came to after this was showing how some people were pressured to join the rioting. This part was made up of multiple duets that led into one another, each being a different style. One duet (Tom and Ash) was contact improvisation, a couple (Tom and Toby; Tom and Dan) were stage combat, a couple (Tom and Rhiannon; Tom and Lewis) were more physical theatre, and one duet (Tom and I) was balletic/contemporary-styled. Once we have fully developed this scene, we will add different lighting effects for each scene to build atmosphere and tension.
